Winner: “Ghostly” By Garry Everett
“Lake Mulwala is located on the border of NWS and Victoria and is an area I try to make time to photograph when visiting family,” explains Everett. “The lake is an unforgettable sight with its gnarly dead gum trees still standing today, 60 plus years since the area was flooded when the dam was built. This particular morning, I was photographing from the Victorian side of the lake, but a bank of fog had obscured everything until a slight breeze helped clear things out a little, just after sunrise. The conditions then changed dramatically as the sun broke through, interacting with the fog and clouds to create this wonderful dramatic light. While the color image is one of my favorites, the tonal range of light was well suited to this monochrome image, which is just as dramatic as its color twin.”
