CAMPING GEAR

The ever-popular climbing film series Reel Rock returns this month with a loaded premiere you won’t want to miss.

Four films spotlight the Wide Boyz, the world’s only known V16 barefoot boulderer, gay climbing icon Alex Johnson, plus Alex Honnold and Tommy Caldwell.

In special events and bonus content, climbers Margo Hayes and Matty Hong discuss a mercurial Colorado crag with some of the most challenging climbing in the U.S. Yosemite legend Beth Rodden talks about body image, and a little-known Mexican climber develops stunning limestone routes inside cenotes.

What more could you ask for? How about panel discussions and Q&As with Honnold and boulderer Nina Williams, gear giveaways, and discounted tickets?

It’s all on tap for Reel Rock 16, which premieres the weekend of March 24-27, 2022. Choose a ticket package for the premiere now and take 15% off the full price. Weekend tickets start at $25 (down from $30), while the Reel Rock annual package now costs $95 (also discounted!).

Here’s an overview of the films and what to expect from each option.

Reel Rock 16 Weekend Ticket: Watch the New Films

The $25 weekend ticket option lets you stream the entire weekend-long Reel Rock 16 premiere. That includes feature films, bonus content, panel discussions, and gear giveaways during the event.

Reel Rock 16 Feature Films

  • “Bridge Boys” — Pete Whittaker and Tom Paul Randall of the Wide Boyz take on “the most ridiculous crack climb ever attempted.” The route, called “The Great Rift,” is a 2,500-foot crack under a bridge. It checks in around 5.12+.
  • “Barefoot Charles” — French forest dweller Charles Albert has been called (tongue only partially in cheek) “the spirit of bouldering.” The film follows him as he makes and drinks wine in caves and sends V16 boulder problems barefoot without crash pads.
  • “Big Things To Come” — Johnson takes on “The Swarm,” V13/14, in Bishop, California (see below). Johnson inspired nonbinary and female climbers worldwide when she topped out the classic problem, which many thought suited a male climbing style better.
  • “Cuddle” — Honnold and Caldwell take on what might be their biggest project yet: 17 alpine summits in enchainment. The challenge appears to have brought the two even closer together — literally.

Bonus Content

Watch Hazel Findlay fight through a scary 5.13 trad route in marginal weather conditions. Then get a lesson in personal challenge from Rodden. Elsewhere, Hong and Hayes deliver expert knowledge on the little-known Fortress, and Adolfo “Fito” Trujillo shows off his eye-popping cenote routes.

An update from Memphis Rox, a community-focused, Black-owned climbing gym, completes the circuit.

Hosts, Giveaways, and Q&As

Climbing superstars Honnold and Williams (featured in Reel Rock 14 for her highball bouldering) host the weekend. Gear giveaways include Black Diamond, The North Face, and Yeti (we see Camalots, a rope, and a backpack cooler).

Q&As were still a mystery as of this writing, but plan on hearing from the biggest names in the sport.

Reel Rock Annual Package: Year-Round Climbing Goodies

Reel Rock’s annual package includes everything in the weekend premiere, plus a few added perks you can access anytime. It does let viewers use Reel Rock Unlimited to stream the premiere through Apple TV, Roku, and mobile devices.

Perks start with a year of free access to the Unlimited app. It consolidates all 150 Reel Rock films in one place and drops occasional first-look and exclusive content. Regular annual pricing is $150.

Annual package buyers also get a free T-shirt with groovy ’70s-style flatirons design and gear deals throughout the year, with giveaways and special offers from the company’s brand partners. And it includes a 25% discount at the Reel Rock store, which includes merch like hoodies and shirts, beanies, and posters.

Get ready to pull up a camp chair, crack a send beer, and grab the popcorn. Reel Rock 16 is right around the corner!
