The topography in the region varies widely, containing many hills and valleys that were carved by the glacier.
The park has over a dozen lakes and small ponds, and 8 of them are large enough to support fish populations year around. Expect to catch bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass and more. Hiking, biking and horseback riding is also enjoyed by visitors.
Mauthe Lake Campground has 135 sites, including 51 electrical sites and a shower building. The campsites are spread out over a vast area and provide a feeling of seclusion that many guests enjoy. Some of the campsites are tucked into the trees at lower elevations, while others are positioned on tops of hills, providing a more scenic vista. Whatever your preference is, you are sure to find it at Mauthe Lake.
There is even a teepee available for those desiring a rustic and unique camping experience. It’s 16 feet wide and comes with 4 cots. There is room for an additional tent at the teepee site if needed. Fires and heaters are not allowed in the teepee, so make sure you have warm sleeping bags if you’ll be camping early or late season. Mauthe Lake Campground also sells firewood, and is open year round. Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance.
The Kettle Moraine State Forest Northern Unit is also a popular destination in the winter. Some of the finest cross country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing and snowmobiling in the area can be found.
