Winner: “Sandhills In The Clouds” By David Connel
“I have photographed birds at Bosque del Apache several times,” says Connel. “My main early-morning strategy is to scout the fields and find out where the sandhill cranes are roosting for the night. I position myself upwind from the birds and wait for the action to happen. I wanted to capture sandhill cranes against the interesting cloud backdrop. In order to keep the landscape out of the picture and the birds low in the sky, I stood on top of my pickup camper to gain a high vantage point. From this perch, I was able to capture the image I envisioned.”
Exposure: 1/2500 sec., f/8, ISO 800, 220mm.
