Is the $750 Hyper Ebike from Walmart a good buy for hunting?

In this review, we are going to take a look at the Hyper Ebike line sold by Walmart and see just how capable this budget friendly electric bike is.

Last year we locked in a 320 acre hunting lease in Northern Michigan for whitetail hunting. The lease has a mix of dense woods and clearings with minimal trails throughout the property. Last year we had access to an ATV which was perfect for traversing the property when we were getting ready for hunting season and also a great way to transport hunters from our basecamp to their tree stand.

The trouble with ATVs is of course the amount of noise they make when you are using them. With that in mind, we started looking at alternative travel methods that would have a little bit more stealth for our early morning approaches to our tree stands. Ebikes have been growing in popularity in the last few years and are being used for a number of different applications from daily commutes to trail riding. Brands have even popped up who are tailoring their Ebikes towards hunters but, there is just one problem, they are really expensive. When I say expensive, I mean you could buy an Ebike that costs more than a well equipped, brand new ATV.

Some buyers may not care about spending over $5,000 on an Ebike, but others will and that is where a more budget friendly option comes in to play. Since we have a specific purpose for wanting Ebikes, we were already narrowing down our potential options and some of the more budget friendly bikes on the market. I stumbled across Hyper while perusing the Walmart website and started to dig in on what they had to offer.

Hunting Ebike

Hyper Bike Company has a really large offering for everyone in the family, with bikes for kids and adults. Both the Hyper eBikes and standard bikes are sold exclusively at Walmart so, you can do your searching on their website or Walmart’s website. Both sites will have full product details and descriptions as well as a ton of images of each bike.

Hyper MTB Ebike

The Hyper MTB Ebike is honestly one of the most reasonably priced Ebikes that I have come across while scouring the web. One of the biggest things that we were looking for was a bike that was a fit physically and also had enough capability to haul additional weight for our gear when hunting. Admittedly, neither of us are in peak physical condition, sitting around the 220 LBS mark for personal weight, but the bike has a rider capacity of 275 LBS which is more than enough. Even if we were to load a bag for the day and our bows or crossbows, we wouldn’t even come close to hitting the maximum weight capacity. Beyond the rider weight, you can also use a trailer to take the strain off of your back and pull your gear behind you.

One feature about the Hyper MTB Ebike that I really like is that the battery is removable. I think Apple started us down a path of non-removable batteries that a lot of electronics manufacturers have adopted but, the trouble with that is that it isn’t user friendly. With the Hyper MTB Ebike, you can charge your bike with the battery installed or removed, which I personally love. If you ride your bike for the day and take your battery down to zero, you can still use your bike as a standard rider while your battery is back at camp or home charging up.

As far as the ride goes, this bike is really comfortable and well built. This model has a 29″ frame built for riders 6′ and up, but Hyper also has a comparable bike with a 26″ frame for riders below 6′. It also comes stock with a Shimano 6 grip shifter and Shimano rear derailleur. Shimano is a household name in the bike industry and supply parts for a number of manufacturers, so as far as the gear system goes, you are in good hands.

Something to consider with this Ebike is that it is not operated by a throttle like some of the more expensive options on the market. The Hyper MTB Ebike offers pedal assistance, which means you will be an active participant in your ride. This was one of the only things that I was skeptical about when purchasing the Hyper MTB Ebike. I had not used a pedal assist Ebike and so I wasn’t sure just how much effort would be required from me as the rider. It’s not that I am a lazy person, it’s more that I was considering how I planned to use this bike. In my mind, I was envisioning a cold November evening having hunted all day and facing a ride back to camp with all of my gear.

Hyper Ebike

I have to say that I was far less skeptical of a pedal assist Ebike after breaking this out and taking it for a ride. What I found with the Hyper Ebike, is that pedal assistance in this case does not mean that you are putting in a tremendous amount of effort to use the motor. All that is required of the rider is a quick revolution of the pedals every so often to keep the motor engaged and working for you. If you don’t want to pedal continuously, you don’t have to. Now. if you are maxing this bike out at weight capacity and going up a steep hill, you will need to put a bit more effort in. There is only so much a motor can do and you shouldn’t expect an Ebike to have the same towing capacity as an ATV.

We are still a ways out from hunting season, so to test this bike out I threw on my 30lb ruck plate and headed over to some of the more steep inclines my city had to offer. I was able to easily make it up each hill with little effort and this is exactly what I was looking for from a budget Ebike.

Overall, this bike is going to be a perfect addition to camp and our hunting lease. We have two and are looking to secure a couple more to provide all of the hunters at camp the independence to be able to come and go as needed from their tree stands without waking the dead with a loud gas powered engine.

Pros/Affordable, stylish, comfortable ride, very capable

Cons/Shorter Battery life than more expensive competitors, pedal assist may not be right for everyone, Hyper only offers one color option

Bottom Line/If you want to dive in to the Ebike market without taking out a second mortgage, this bike is going to be perfect for you.

Unboxing

The Hyper MTB Ebike came in a pretty large box, but that is to be expected when ordering any type of bicycle online. The box itself weighed over 50lbs, so if you aren’t comfortable moving around that much weight, grab a friend to help you bring your bike inside or where you plan to assemble it.

In terms of assembly, it was actually very easy. The bike was about 85% assembled out of the box. All that was required on my end was installing the handlebars, pedals, and battery.

Ride Time

I’d say that you can comfortably expect the ride time of your hyper Ebike to live up to the manufacturers description. Hyper states that the MTB Ebike has a battery life of 1 hour or 20 miles and I tested this out to see how my bike fared in the wild.

In terms of the 20 mile claim, we were able to easily accomplish this in city streets with minimal inclines. For an off road test I took the Hyper MTB Ebike to a local park wth 14 miles of easy – difficult trails. With the bike on the Medium setting, I was able to make it all the way through with the trail system with a little bit left in the tank. Overall I would have to say I am not only happy with the performance but also happy to see the product description live up to it’s real world use.

Capability

As far as capability goes, the mountain bike itself is an easy rider and very comfortable to spend time on riding through the city or on trails. I’m by no means a diehard mountain bike rider, but I did find this bike to be very similar to entry level TREK that I used to have.

Charging

Out of the box the manufacturer recommends that you charge the Ebike for a minimum of 4 hours before use, which I started before assembling the bike. True to the manual, after the 4 hour charge time was complete, I was ready to roll with full power available to me.

If you plan to run your bike down, the charge time from flat is also in the 4 hour range as well.

Like all other larger batteries, it’s recommended that you throw the battery on the charger every 4-6 weeks so that you don’t allow it to become completely drained. Lithium-ion batteries can experience performance issues once they get to a state of having no charge, so a quick charge every so often will keep your battery healthy long term.

What is the battery capacity and output?

  • Motor: Rear Hub Brushless 36volt 250W
  • Battery: Integrated Flush-Mount 36volt 7.8 AH

Can the Hyper Ebike get wet?

Yes and no. It won’t be the end of the world if you are riding on some unfavorable trails and you have water or mud splash up on the bike, but the manufacturer recommends that you do not leave your bike in the rain or exposed to water that would allow the battery to become saturated.

Are Returns accepted?

Yes! If for some reason you need to return your Hyper MTB Ebike you can do so within 30 days of your purchase at your local Walmart.

Can you order back up batteries?

As far as I can tell you can not purchases additional batteries for the MTB Ebike from Hyper.

Can I customize the bike?

Yes! Many riders may have a gear system or front fork suspension that they love and you can absolutely customize this bike with many after market parts to fit your needs.

What is the top speed?

Then Hyper MTB Ebike boasts a top speed of 20MPH with additional speed settings that will allow you to extend your ride time at slower speeds.

Subject – Not sure how I went without this bike so long.

I love this bike. I weigh 190lbs and on a straight road, I get up to 19mph which is way faster then what I need. I go so many places on this bike that I would have never gone to if I had to do all the peddling. I can move thru the orange groves around here so much easier then before. This bike is quiet, so I have been able to get close to some of the wildlife roaming in these parts, (wild hogs, turkeys,etc.). I ride this bike almost every day and the battery has not given out on me so far. I have used this bike to help round up my neighbors cows from the orange groves when ever they decide to take a tour. I am very satisfied with this bike and I recommend it to anyone who likes to ride a bike without all the hassles of having to do all the peddling yourself.
